Rea, D. K. and Leinen, M., 1988. Asian aridity and the zonal westerlies: Late Pleistocene and Holocene record of eolian deposition in the northwest Pacific Ocean. Palaeogeogr., Palaeoclimatol., Palaeoecol., 66:1 8. A 30,000-year record of eolian deposition in the northwestern Pacific Ocean provides a history of the aridity of the Asian source region and information on the changing latitude and intensity of the zonal westerlies. The position of the maximum in eolian flux to the deep sea remained unchanged at 38 ° to 40°N during this entire time period, but the dust flux record of aridity is greatest 6000 years ago at the Holocene climatic optimum. Eolian grainsize data indicate that the northern margin of the westerly jet stream retreated northward during the Holocene to a poleward extreme at about 6000 years ago and then moved back toward the equator. The change in wind intensity across this margin was continually reduced throughout the Holocene. These sorts of data enhance our understanding of the behavior of the atmosphere during times of climate change and can be used to test computer-generated models of past climatic conditions.

The role of changes in the large-scale atmospheric systems in the evolution of the late Pleistocene and Holocene climate of the Zagros Mountains
1-Introduction The Zagros Mountains range with a northwest-southeast direction covers a large part of western Iran. This range acts as a barrier against mid-latitude westerly airflows and thereby generates significant orographic rainfalls, resulting in a hospitable environment which has been home to ancient civilizations. Major variations in the westerlies can lead to significant environ...
متن کاملClimate-Human interaction over the Iranian Plateau during the Upper Pleistocene-Holocene: A review
During the past two decades an array of studies have shed light on potential links between the evolution of Hominids as well as Human dispersal out of Africa and episodes of abrupt climate change. Although archaeological evidences suggest that anatomically modified humans appeared in Africa between 200 and 150 ky ago, the timing of the early humans migration out of Africa remained unclear. Stra...
متن کاملHigh-resolution proxy record of Holocene climate from a loess section in Southwestern Nebraska, USA
Multi-proxy analysis was used to produce a high-resolution paleoclimatic record from an exceptionally thick section of the Holocene Bignell Loess near Wauneta, Southwestern Nebraska, in the central Great Plains. The Wauneta section has excellent age control, based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dating, and records multiple episodes of rapid loess deposition alternati...
متن کاملA late Quaternary record of eolian silt deposition in a maar lake, St. Michael Island, western Alaska
Recent stratigraphic studies in central Alaska have yielded the unexpected finding that there is little evidence for full-glacial (late Wisconsin) loess deposition. Because the loess record of western Alaska is poorly exposed and not well known, we analyzed a core from Zagoskin Lake, a maar lake on St. Michael Island, to determine if a full-glacial eolian record could be found in that region. P...

Extended Abstract: 1-Introduction There is a direct relationship in evaporative deposit with the changes in the depth of the lake. Therefore?, valuable information is gained regarding the causation of changes in environment over time. Evaporite minerals formation is a natural phenomenon accruing in water-bodies containing deferent mineral Since sulfate is abundant in seawater and saline lakes...
